DB Schenker terminal in Bulgaria to open in spring 2010

DB Schenker has announced that construction of its new logistics centre in Bozhuriste near the Bulgarian capital of Sofia is coming to a close, with the EUR10 million (US$15 million) terminal scheduled to go into operation in spring 2010.

The centre that is situated on the international road link between Sofia and Belgrade comprises a logistics warehouse with a 3,000-square-metre hall that can hold around 4,000 pallets and will be equipped with high-bay racking. The terminal's 2,000-square-metre cross-docking hall will have 30 loading bays, 20 of which have hydraulic ramps. Both buildings are equipped with state-of-the-art security technology and fire safety systems. An office complex covering roughly 3,500 square meters is also being built next to the centre, a company statement said.

The terminal has two private sidings with a total length of 220 metres. A ramp will enable three x four-axle cars to be processed simultaneously. Up to six cars can be loaded and unloaded on the other track.

"In our region, we are relying increasingly on railports-terminals where we can implement intermodal solutions that are profitable for our customers," said Elmar Wieland, chairman of Schenker & Co AG, Vienna, responsible for activities in Bulgaria.
