LONG a champion of the all-water route through Panama from Asia, the Port of Savannah has again expanded its small but growing South Asian trade through Suez with the addition of the Indamex service from Hapag Lloyd, NYK and OOCL from January.
"Savannah is quickly becoming the port of choice for Suez services and currently participates in seven of the nine services transiting the Suez Canal to the United States east coast," said Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) executive director Doug Marchand.
Mr Marchand made the remarks in the course of announcing that the vessel sharing Indamex service, which covers the Indian subcontinent and the eastern Mediterranean, will call at Savannah from January.
"We welcome the Indamex service to Savannah and look forward to working closely with the consortium of shipping lines and cargo owners that make up this excellent new opportunity," said Mr Marchand.
With the Indamex, Savannah now offers service to all major Indian ports - Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Chennai - and will better fill that country's growing demand for export commodities such as fabrics, cotton, paper, paperboard and woodpulp. Imports such as rugs, sheets, towels, blankets and apparel will reach growing consumer markets such as Atlanta, Orlando and Memphis with greater efficiency and savings.
