AP Moller-Maersk Group, the world's top logistics company, has decided to establish a global service centre in Tianfu Software Park in Chengdu, capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province, reports Logistics Week.
The company will also set up a logistics processing branch as well as a documents processing centre in the software park; where the company's new facility will cover 15,000 square metres and integrate operations from Maersk's other branches, covering orders and documents processing as well as training.
Maersk said it decided to locate its logistics offices in Chengdu because it had become the economic and financial hub of south western China and had gradually formed a cluster of shared service centres.
It said Chengdu has attracted such international companies as DHL's Shared Services Centre, Lafarge's back-office services centre, Amazon's order fulfillment centre, and domestic companies like Alibaba and Tencent, which have set up companies there.
During the first half of 2009, Accenture, DHL, JPMorgan and Volkswagen opened their offices in Chengdu and 134 "Fortune 500"-listed companies already have a presence there.
