SHELL has struck a deal with Russia to develop several gasfield projects in the country, following a meeting with prime minister Vladimir Putin.
The deal involves developing projects around Sakhalin Island, the Pacific, the Yamal peninsula and the Kara Sea in the northwestern Arctic.
Putin told them they had his backing to invest in the undeveloped Sakhalin-3 and 4 areas. According to Gazprom, Shell and France's Total have been shortlisted to build an LNG plant to process gas from Gazprom and Novatek gasfields in the Yamal region.
Shell has also signed a co-operation agreement with Sovcomflot to provide LNG tankers for the new Sakhalin and Yamal projects. Sovcomflot is already carrying the Sakhalin-2 LNG. In its bid to broaden the backing from Russian government officials, Shell also says it plans to charter Aframax tankers from Sovcomflot for the European market.
